Use Your Professional Organizations to Guide Your Business Efforts
A couple of months ago, I came across the PPA (Professional Photography of America) website (PPA; ppa.com) and signed up for a few free webinars focused on the business aspects of photography, along with many great resources for photographers like me. It was interesting to discover how many of the concepts could apply to any business.
“Marketing Basics: What You Need to Know,” a webinar provided by Andrea Taylor, included definitions for marketing, sales, and branding. She outlined the Marketing Mix of the 4 P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. A few of the valuable insights from Taylor:
- “Marketing is the ‘pull’ that gets the customer to you in the first place. At the end of the day, marketing is generating leads.”
- “Put simply, your ‘brand’ is what people think of when he or she hears your brand name. It’s everything the public thinks it knows about your name brand offering – both factual and emotional.”
- “Promotion elements include advertising, public relations, direct selling and sales promotions.”
I am glad that I took the time to discover professional organizations through internet searches. Each offers a something a little bit different, including professional development activities such as webinars, white papers, etc. I also found names of industry leaders who can be additional sources of information and guidance specific to my business niche. Good luck in finding yours!
